Stages to Becoming an LGV Driver
- Obtain forms D2 and D4 to apply for your provisional licence.
- Arrange a medical and ask the GP to complete form D4. We can book this for you at a special discounted rate.
- Send forms D2 (Provisional licence application) and D4 (Medical) to DVLA with your current driving licence.
- When you receive your provisional licence, arrange a driving assessment with Bassett's Transport Training, and book your theory tests. Our team can book these for you if you wish.
- When you have passed your theory tests, book your practical driver training with Bassett's Transport Training. You may also need to book a CPC practical demonstration test if you passed your car test after 1st January 1997.
- Complete your practical driver training course and test to obtain your Category C or CE licence.
Driving Assessment
On receipt of your provisional licence, contact Bassett's Transport Training to arrange a driving assessment in the category of vehicle which you wish to learn to drive.
Following the assessment, our instructor will recommend the duration of the course of instruction required based on your standard of driving and previous experience to ensure that you complete the correct amount of training to enable you to pass your driving test. If you book a training course with Bassett's Transport Training and pay a non-refundable deposit, no charge will be applied for your assessment.
Theory Tests - CPC Mod 1
There are two parts to the theory test: multiple-choice and hazard perception. The tests can be booked for the same day (subject to availability) or taken on different days if you wish. Both parts must be passed before a practical test can be taken.
To pass the multiple-choice test, you must correctly answer 85 of 100 questions in the allowed time of 1 hour 55 minutes. The answers to all the questions are contained in the book, The Official Theory Test for Drivers of Large Vehicles. The cost of this test is £26.

The hazard perception test consists of 19 film clips (18 clips containing 1 scoreable hazard and 1 clip containing 2 scoreable hazards) of real road scenes containing potential hazards. When watching the clips, you respond by clicking the mouse button as soon as you become aware of a hazard. The pass mark is 67 out of a possible 100 and the allowed time is 45 minutes. The cost of this test is £11.

Practical Training Course and Test - CPC Mod 3
Bassett's Transport Training will schedule your practical driver training course at a mutually agreeable time and will book a driving test, which will take place on the last day of the course. Practical driver training for all on-road courses with Bassett's Transport Training is conducted on one instructor to one trainee basis.
The practical driving test will take approximately for about 1 hour. The test fee is £115 for week-day tests. Candidates must have passed their theory tests before a practical driving test can be undertaken.
Our Tittensor depot is approved by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) as an examination site for LGV driving tests. We have a dedicated on-site manoeuvring area for our driver training candidates and DVSA Examiners come to our site to conduct the LGV practical driving tests enabling candidates to train and be tested from the same site.
On successful completion of the practical driving test, you can exchange your provisional entitlement licence for a full entitlement licence through DVLA.
Should a trainee not meet the required standard, further instruction (if required) and a re-test can be arranged. The instruction and test time is charged on a per-hour basis and the amount of instruction required will vary according to the trainee's requirements. Please contact our team for further details.
Case Study Test - CPC Mod 2
The case study tests your knowledge and understanding by examining how you put your skills into practice, with real-life scenarios that you may encounter in your working life.
You will be asked 50 multiple choice questions.
The test lasts for 75 minutes and consists of 7 case studies, each with between 6 and 8 questions. The pass mark is 38 out of a possible 50. This theory test is conducted at DSA theory test centres and costs £23.
Practical Demonstration Test - CPC Mod 4
In addition to passing a practical driving test (Module 3), to obtain your Driver CPC, you will also need to pass a practical demonstration test (Module 4) focusing on vehicle safety. In this ½ hour test, which is conducted at an LGV practical driving test centre, drivers are required to demonstrate their knowledge and ability in the following areas:
- Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use
- Security of the vehicle and contents
- Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants
- Ability to assess emergency situations
- Ability to prevent physical risk
- Demonstrate your ability through a physical, walk round vehicle safety check
The test consists of 5 topic areas which cover the Driver CPC syllabus and a practical load-security element. In order to pass, the candidate has to score 15 out of a possible 20 points in each topic area (75%) and an overall score of 80%. The test can only be taken following successful completion of the case studies test (CPC Mod 2).
